Science Week at Mernda Hills Christian College was an exciting celebration of curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning. From lunchtime challenges to classroom investigations and a spectacular science show, students across the school were immersed in activities that showcased how science is both fun and essential to understanding the world around us.
Students shared that the variety of activities throughout the week kept them engaged and inspired:
“Incorporating science throughout the week such as lunch times, science kahoot in chapel etc. made it fun. The Science Show was very engaging because students got to participate. Doing the flour and fire experiment was scary at first, but really enjoyable to watch!” – Isabelle
“My favourite highlight of Science Week was making our terrarium.” – Johan
“The highlights of Science Week was the juice tasting challenge that was pretty fun and tasty. I also liked the Minties Challenge because I came second.” – Simone
“My highlights of Science Week was probably the activities we got to do during the lunch times — and we got prizes as well! That was fun.” – Meher
“It was fun and engaging, especially the show at the end of the week. Each of the activities showcased different science skills learnt and taught in the curriculum.” – Anora
We are also pleased to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of some of our students:
Our Year 9 students explored the theme “Decoding the World” through an investigation of seed adaptations and ecosystem survival. They examined a variety of real-world seeds to understand how seed dispersal plays a crucial role in plant survival and ecosystem recovery.
In their final challenge, students used AI to design and visualise their own fictional seed, complete with annotated features and justifications for how it would survive in a specific environment. This activity was both creative and scientific, highlighting the many ways plants shape the world around us.
The winners of our year Year 10 Rocket launch were Alvina, Ananya, and Ashley. They had an hang time of three seconds and the most impressive result was that they managed to stay 8 metres from the launch.
Science Week was a true success — engaging students of all year levels, sparking curiosity, and encouraging hands-on exploration. We are proud of the achievements, creativity, and enthusiasm our students displayed throughout the week.
