On Monday 23 June, Year 12 Physics students visited the Australian Synchrotron, a major research facility located in the technology and innovation hub of Clayton. While there, they conducted experiments demonstrating the duality of light, observing how it behaves as both a wave and a particle, a concept central to quantum physics. They were also given a rare behind-the-scenes tour of the Synchrotron facility, where they learned how intense X-rays are produced by accelerating electrons to near light-speed. This hands-on experience not only deepened their understanding of complex physics concepts covered in their Unit 4 VCE Physics course, but also offered an inspiring glimpse into the cutting-edge world of scientific research, a unique and valuable opportunity that will no doubt support their future academic pursuits and inform their career choices in science and engineering.
