Recently, our Year 2 students stepped into the vibrant world of acoustics during an unforgettable Science of Sound incursion presented by Fizzics Education.
The session kicked off with students investigating a big question: what actually makes sound? Through high-energy demonstrations, the students discovered that all sounds—from high-pitched squeaks to deep rumbles—are caused by vibrations. They explored how changes in vibration speed alter the pitch, while the size of the wave determines the volume.
The highlight of the experience was seeing the invisible world of acoustic waves brought to life. Students watched digital traces move across real-time oscilloscopes and stood in awe as sand transformed into geometric patterns across a vibrating Chladni plate.
